Rumour: LG to make Nexus 5 and Nexus 7.7

lg_logoI am always a little weary about posting up rumours but this one seems to be gaining some traction.

According to reports, LG are working with Google to release two more Nexus devices this summer.

When I tweeted this story out a few days ago the first response I got back was “what the… they can’t even supply the current models”. But yes, it looks like there may be a follow up to the hugely successful Nexus 7 this year.

This doesn’t surprise me too much as the first Nexus tablet will be approaching a year old by then, and that’s a long time in the fast paced tech industry.

Nexus 7.7

A slightly larger Nexus 7 is clearly taking aim at the iPad mini and will offer an Android based solution to anyone who agrees that a little extra screen size makes all the difference. Personally I think screen size really comes down to personal preference, and the great thing about the open nature of Android is that you get to choose between a whole range of different manufacturers all providing a slightly different spin on things.

It seems likely that any new tablet will make use of Nvidia’s Tegra 4 chipset which offers a decent performance boost over the Tegra 3 chipset present in the Nexus 7.  It would also follow that Google would use a new device to launch the next iteration of Android.

Nexus 7.7 Specification Rumours:

  • 7.7-inch display (duh!)
  • 1920 x 1200 resolution
  • Nvidia Tegra 4 processor
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • 720p HD front and rear cameras
  • 16/32 GB storage
  • Android 5 Key Lime Pie

Nexus 5

This is a follow up to the successful LG built Nexus 4 mobile phone.  The 5 in the title is actually to notify a 5″ screen rather than to indicate a second generation Nexus 4.

LG are already pressing ahead on their own with the 4.7″ Optimus G and the 5″ Optimus G Pro phones already confirmed for release.  Both of these phones offer stunning specs and push ahead of the original N4 in a number of areas, however they are likely to cost a lot more than their ancestor.

So it will be interesting to see what a new Nexus branded phone from LG might look like, but either way it makes sense for Google to offer devices in a broad range of sizes.  Having followed the smartphone / tablet market closely over the last couple of years I have yet to see any clear consensus emerging on what is the optimum size and I believe that by offering choice and evolving an app market that works across a broad range of screen sizes Android will be well setup to deal with a fast changing industry.

Nexus 5 Specification Rumours:

  • 1080 x 1920 screen Resolution
  • Nvidia Tegra 4 CPU
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • 13 MP camera
  • 8/16 GB of storage
  • Android 5 Key Lime Pie
Note: This is at the rumour stage so don’t go holding your breath, however Google’s I/O conference will be coming up in May so if any new tablets or a new Android release are on the horizon we should know soon.

Comments

  1. Looking forward to the Nexus 5, I just hope I can grab one before they sell out!

  2. I wish they would make a Nexus 3 …. same specs as an N4 but say with a 3.7 – 3.9 inch screen … which would be a bit more pocket-sized

    • I was a bit unsure about the N4′s size before buying – I didn’t really want a big phone and there was no way to look at it before buying. But it really is very pocketable, by being thinner and lighter it is much less noticeable than my old 3″ phone in m’troosers.

Actually it is a bit disconcerting because I find myself continuously checking it is still there!
